Howza is a superstar.

Well, technically, he’s en route to becoming a superstar: he’s a successful South African musician (nominated for a Channel O award), a TV star (from Generations and Backstage) and a diabetes ambassador (for Novo Nordisk).

He’s also the cover star of Sweet Life’s first issue, being sent out in November this year! (Have you signed up yet, hmm?)

We were lucky enough to spend a couple of hours with him on Friday morning, shooting the cover and asking him a couple of questions about life, fame, diabetes, diet, exercise, family, and how they all link up. What an extraordinary guy! Humble, down to earth and so full of passion for his music and spreading the (positive) word about diabetes. If you haven’t seen his video yet, check it out above. And look out for our feature article in Sweet Life!

I choose to live…

At the end of August I’ll be interviewing well-known nutritionist and author Patrick Holford about his latest book: Say No to Diabetes - 10 healthy ways to prevent or reverse diabetes.

Well, at least that’s what he says! He claims to be able to prevent or reverse (Type 2) diabetes. If you listen to his video explanation (below), you’ll see that he’s talking about Type 2 diabetes, but he does say that if you’re a Type 1 diabetic this diet will help you cut your insulin intake by 70% (which is huge). I’m aware that many dieticians and doctors are not big fans of Mr. Holford’s, but I’m still curious to read what he has to say about diabetes.

Here’s what the book promises:

Discover:
* The root causes of diabetes (both types) and how to reverse them
* What and how to eat for perfect blood sugar control
* Improve sleep
* A tailored diabetes-busting supplement programme
* The truth about diabetes drugs
* The gold-standard anti-diabetes diet plus recipes
* Everything you need to put together your own anti-diabetes action plan

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Find out more here.

Also, we’re going to be doing a giveaway of this book in the first issue of Sweet Life! So what are you waiting for? Sign up now, and get your free copy in November… With the chance to win Say No to Diabetes.

So here it is! The first ever update on the world of Sweet Life…

It’s been a long time coming for the three of us (Bridget, Claire and Mark – the trio who make up Sweet Life), but it finally seems like things are coming together, and we are SO excited for our November 1st launch into the world! A couple of people have asked us why we wanted to start this magazine, why we wanted to build this community, and it really boils down to one thing: we want to share our belief that being diabetic doesn’t have to hold you back from life.

When I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2007, it felt like my life was coming to an end. All the information I was given told me how diabetics are at greater risk for all kinds of complications – heart disease, liver disease, blindness, amputation. Nobody ever said: if you’re in good control, there’s nothing you can’t do.

Well, that’s what we’re saying right here! If you’re in good control, you can live a full and wonderful life, with diabetes.

So here’s to an exciting diabetic adventure, and the start of great things to come!
