Learning more about diabetes

Last month I was lucky enough to spend three evenings on a diabetes course run by the Endocrine Education Group in Cape Town. It was an extraordinary experience – I don’t think I’ve ever learnt so much about diabetes in such a short time!

The course is, in essence, a crash course in everything you need to know about diabetes. They’ve put together a team of experts to present on everything from the basics of diabetes to exercise / eye health / foot health / the diabetic diet / the emotional side of diabetes / diabetic supplements / setting goals etc etc etc. We have so many ideas for our next issue of Sweet Life magazine, I don’t know where we’ll start!

What’s so amazing about these courses (they run them every month) is not only that you get access to all these experts and can ask them any questions you might have, but that you get a much deeper understanding of diabetes – from every angle. And you get to meet other people with diabetes in the same situation, and dealing with many of the same issues. What a relief!

The course runs three evenings of the week, from 6 to 8pm (closer to 9pm with all the questions!) and I can’t recommend it highly enough. At the moment it is only being run in Cape Town (please let us know if you know of other courses around the country), so if you’re in the Western Cape – book your place now!

Here are the details of the next course:

A message from Dr Joel Dave:
I am running a 3 session Diabetic Education Course with my medical counsellor, Lara Wiese, and we would like to invite you to attend. It will be held on 29, 30 November and 1 December 2011, ie Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening, from 6pm-8pm.
The structure will be formal speakers addressing the whole group of patients for the first hour, then some tea/coffee and snacks, and the last hour will be small group sessions of 15 minutes each. This will enable you to ask questions and be more interactive without feeling shy! We have about 20 different health professionals speaking over the 3 sessions, from podiatrists, dieticians, wound care specialists and ophthalmologist to Sports Science Institute and a weight-loss hypnotherapist! We aim to cover all aspects of diabetes management in a positive, motivational way, and give each person a chance to interact with doctors, nurses and others in an informal environment. By the end of the course you should feel empowered and knowledgeable, and inspired to look after yourself.

Registration:
Please contact Lara Wiese for a registration form, on 079 526 4931, fax 086 594 7777 or email info at larawieseconsulting.com

Places:
Places are available on a first come first served basis, and they are limited, so if you are keen please register by sending the above information as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment. I can hold a place for you for 48 hours, after which you will need to have made payment and faxed/emailed proof of this. This will then secure your booking. Please note the last course was fully booked a full week before it started, and we have a waiting list for this course so send your registration without delay.

Cost:
The total cost for the 3 sessions is R350 per person, or R600 per couple (ie diabetic person and partner/friend/care-giver).
So you’ll be paying less than R60 per hour to pick the brains of specialists who charge up to R 1200 per hour!

Bank Details:
Please contact Lara for banking details.

Venue:
We are holding it at Room 310, Library Square in Wilderness Rd, Claremont, opposite Kingsbury Hospital entrance, and there will be free secure parking available.
