The Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation

Last week, I was lucky enough to meet a very inspiring lady: Bongi Ngema-Zuma, fiancee to President Zuma and diabetes awareness advocate.

We had a wonderful interview with her, and will be publishing a long article in our second issue of Sweet Life (along with some lovely photos taken at the Union Buildings in Pretoria – very fancy!) For now, I just wanted to let you know about the Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation, in case you haven’t heard of them. Here’s how they describe themselves:

The Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation is at its formative stage, but has firm and far-reaching ambitions. The foundation aims to address issues including health (non-communicable diseases with Special Focus on DIABETES), education and rural development.

Although they say the foundation is at its formative stage, they’ve actually been hard at work getting involved in projects all over the country (I’ll blog about them one by one) and spreading awareness about diabetes and all kinds of non-communicable diseases. On the 26th November this year, they’re organising a walk in Bloemfontein (which we’ll be at!) to raise even more awareness.

Contact them to tell them about your diabetes project, or get involved in one of theirs. If you’re lucky, you may one day get to meet Madam Ngema-Zuma. I promise you it’s a meeting you won’t ever forget!

  1. i would like to talk to Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation, to see how we can liaise with them re – Diabetes SA – Outreach Agents for Change Project which seeks to bring confidence, expertise and a new approach to diabetes education among state health workers who are part of the multi-disciplinary team dealing with the metabolic syndrome, in the rural and disadvantaged regions in SA. we also want to get involved with the minister of health project for healthier parliamentarians. the present form of diabetes education and health education is not working. we need to change our focus based on successful models.
My colleague is the African representative of the International Diabetes Foundation diabetes educators forum fonsisting of 10 colleagues worldwide reaponsible for diabetes education ideas for the future.
my own focus is to seek funding, liaise with DoH coordinators, organise courses, coordinate stats from participants.
